What is Dragon Boating?

The sport of dragon boat racing originated in southern China more than 2,500 years ago. Today, it’s the second fastest growing water sport in the world. The International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF), which organizes the sport internationally, is currently working to include the sport in the Olympics.

Dragon racing boats range in length from 30 to 100 feet. The standard crew consists of 20 paddlers, a steersman and a drummer who works to keep the paddlers in sync to the finish line. Paddlers face forward, in rows of two and races are typically 250 or 500 meter.

How are Teams Formed?
Teams made up of 22-25 members (although only 20 paddlers and 1 drummer are needed, alternates are used to trade off between races). Teams are formed through business organizations, community organizations, high school teams, college teams, athletic organizations, families and friends.
